Is John Edwards engaged to Rielle Hunter? The Enquirer claims that the politician is planning to marry his mistress.

The National Enquirer is reporting that former presidential candidate John Edwards is engaged to be married to his long-time mistress – a report denied by a CBS News source close to the Edwards family.

The paper claims Edwards proposed to Rielle Hunter even as his own children mourned the death last month of their mother, reports CBS News correspondent Betty Nguyen.

An Edwards family source tells CBS News that the Enquirer story is inaccurate, and that Edwards has not proposed to Hunter.

It was the Enquirer that initially exposed the affair between Edwards and Hunter.

Edwards had an affair with Hunter, and the two had a baby girl, Quinn, while Elizabeth was battling breast cancer. Edwards initially denied the affair, but after it was made public he expressed regrets, telling ABC News he had, “made a mistake.”

Last January, the Edwards separated. As elizabeth was dying, her focus remained on preparing her kids for life without a mother.

“The most important thing you can give your children are wings, because you’re not going to always be able to bring food to the nest, sometimes they’re going to have to be able to fly by themselves,” she wrote.

According to the tabloid, John Edwards introduced his three children, with Elizabeth, to Reille and Quinn at a North Carolina restaurant late last month.

The paper quotes an unnamed source: “John pledged his undying love, and promised her that one day they would all ‘become one big, happy family.’ Clearly, he was saying, ‘I want you to marry me,’ but nothing is official yet.” [CBS]

Elizabeth Edwards remained married to John Edwards but she cut him out of her will and left all of her possessions to her children.

Elizabeth Edwards, who died of breast cancer last month, left her estate to her children and made no mention of her estranged husband, former Sen. John Edwards, in her will.

Filed just days before her death, Edwards’ will names daughter Cate Edwards, 28, as executor and leaves the estate to her and the couple’s other two children, Emma Claire and Jack.

“All of my furniture, furnishings, household goods, jewelry, china, silverware and personal effects and any automobiles owned by me at the time of my death I give and bequeath to my children,” said the will, signed on December 1, 2010.

There is no mention of her husband in Edwards’ will, seen by some media and published online by The Huffington Post, ABC News and other sites.

Elizabeth Edwards was at her husband’s side during his two unsuccessful bids for the Democratic presidential nomination, but they split up in January 2010 after 32 years of marriage when his infidelity was revealed.

The split came less than a week after John Edwards, a wealthy trial lawyer, acknowledged he had fathered a baby with campaign aide Rielle Hunter as he sought the 2008 nomination.

Elizabeth Edwards was a successful author, writing “Resilience” and “Saving Graces,” about her battle with cancer and the loss of her son Wade in a car accident.

She died on Dec 7 at age 61. Her will was filed in Orange County, North Carolina. [reuters]

Politico.com, The National Enquirer, Binside TV are nothing but a joke!!! Unfortunately, it’s typical of wrong-wing republicans to word their headlines so that the entire story is misleading. They think they’re getting back at John Edwards but they’re really hurting the Edwards’ children, who are now old enough to understand and, as well, have to face the snide, hurtful remarks of school mates. This makes your whole “crappie” s**t-for-brains writing among among the most heartless I’ve witnessed in sixty-seven years. By the way, I could care less for John Edwards, but give his family a break.
